Introducing Surrey Flame

Joe, with the help of Steve Hillen, bought two horses on spec at the Goresbridge Breeze up and offered them to us and some other potential owners. At the time, we didn’t really think we needed another flat horse but as that was the last breeze up sale of the season we didn’t feel could wait until next April (2020). We are reluctant to buy in the yearling sales again as that hasn’t  really work for us and so we have returned to the trusted formula of buying at the Breeze ups through Steve and Joe. Having  watched the breeze and looking at the breeding, we think they may have found us another gem.
Lot 52

As you can see from his breeze, he’s was very green, but he ran a good time, and what really appealed to us was the way he put his head down in the final yards. On stride lengths he had one of the very best at the sale.

The breeding is special, with the grand-sire being the mighty Galileo !  His 15 year old son, Teofilo, stands in Ireland for E40 000 so Joe bought very close to his standing fee. He’s one of Europe’s top five Black Type sires and capped another fine year with Cross Counter’s Group 1 Melbourne Cup win. Teofilo himself was the Champion 2 Year old in Europe in 2006 winning all 5 of his races (including 2 Group 1s) before injury curtailed his career. The dam Ryedale Mist is out of a sprint sire Equiano, (sire of The Tin Man) and it would appear that the best Teofilo’s are those bred with sprinters. There’s plenty of black type in the breeding, including a half sister to Ryedale Mist in Finjaan who won the Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Surrey Flame made his debut over 6 furlongs, before being gelded. He came back for a much improved run but he’s still a bit of a baby and will need time to grow over the winter. He will return to training at the end of January 2020 and will have his last novice run in March before turning to handicaps. He is French Bred so we can benefit from the French Premiums so there’s bound to be some visits to France to enjoy !

With all the auction costs, agents fees, vetting, transportation, training fees etc we are selling 10 x 7.5% shares for £4850 with £225 monthly fees.  As always if you are interested we invite you to visit Surrey Flame who is already in training with Joe at his Felstead Stables in Lambourn.
