Surrey Blaze took a small step forward on his second racecourse appearance yesterday, but clearly still has a lot to learn. Running in a Class 4 race over 7 furlongs at Newbury, Blaze broke well from the stalls and travelled particularly kindly in the hands of John Egan until about 2 furlongs from home. But once the pressure was applied the horse’s inexperience again showed and he just didn’t know how to get involved. Sensibly, once it was clear he wasn’t going to challenge for a place, he was allowed to come home in his own time. This was undoubtedly a step forward because Blaze raced with the pack and travelled nicely for much of the contest – and it was encouraging that John confirmed the horse definitely has an engine.

While we’d possibly hoped to see more from Blaze yesterday, we know that there’s potentially still a lot more to come from him.
