Gavin, Laura and dedicated members of Warwick’s own team comfort Potters Approach while also deluging him with water to cool him down

Jockey Gavin Sheehan and Potters Approach got a mention from TV presenter and racing columnist Matt Chapman in The Sun newspaper yesterday, following their travails at Warwick last Thursday. Writing about the sterling efforts of Gavin, Travelling Head Girl Laura Parker and racecourse staff to comfort Potters, while dealing with his post-race overheating problems by drenching him in gallon after gallon of water, here’s what ‘Chappers’ had to say:

The lasting impression, which will stay with me forever, came in the care given to Potters Approach after the handicap hurdle. Warren Greatrex’s inmate was clearly feeling the heat and wobbly after his exertions.

Among those helping out was Gavin Sheehan who, having ridden in the tiring event over 3m 1f, performed heroics. In difficult circumstances it was one of the most obvious signs I have ever seen of a jockey truly caring about the horses they ride.

It was both inspirational and a message to those who sometimes suggest racing people use horses like machines. Sheehan deserves a medal, as do all the other people who cared for the gelding.
