Dear All,

Joe and Steve Hillen, bought two horses on spec at the Goresbridge Breeze Up sales in May and asked whether we would be interested as they were horses that Steve H had been following for a while. One in particular was of interest to us but at the time we didn’t think we needed another flat horse as we had just bought Pride. However, it was in the back of our minds that some of the flat horses may be sold during or at the end of the current season and with Goresbridge being the last Breeze Up sale of 2019 it would be April/May 2020 before we could buy another flat horse (we have been put off the yearling sales by past experience). Joe kindly gave us a bit of time to make up our minds as he really liked the horse.

After further discussions with Steve, and with Joe having had a few weeks to work with the horse, we have decided to proceed with the purchase. He will be called Surrey Flame.

Having watched the Breeze Up and looking at the breeding we think they may have found us another gem. He is lot 52 if you follow the link below:

As you can see from his Breeze, he was very green, but still ran a very good time. What really appealed was the way he put his head down and stretched in the final yards. His stride length was one of the best at the sale and this is a quality that Steve always looks for in a horse.

The breeding is special, with the grand-sire being the mighty Galileo!  His 15 year old son, Teofilo, stands in Ireland for E40 000 he was bought for very close to his standing fee. Teofilo is one of Europe’s top five Black Type sires and capped another fine year with Cross Counter’s Group 1 Melbourne Cup win. Teofilo himself was the Champion 2 Year old in Europe in 2006 winning all 5 of his races (including 2 Group 1s) before injury curtailed his career. The dam Ryedale Mist is out of a sprint sire Equiano, (sire of The Tin Man) and Steve H is a strong beliver that the best Galileo’s/Teofilo’s are those bred with sprinters. There’s plenty of black type in the dam’s breeding, including a half sister to Ryedale Mist in Finjaan who won the Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

We would expect Surrey Flame to debut over 6-7 furlongs and he is likely to be a bit more forward and a speedier type than our previous purchases. He is French Bred so benefits from the French Premium should we choose to go down that route due to the better prize money. However, his first race will be in England before we consider whether to give him a run in France as a 2 year old to enable him to run in the French Conditional races next season.

With the auction costs, agents fees, vetting, transportation, training fees etc we are selling 10 x 7.5% shares for £4850 with £225 monthly fees starting from August 1st.

Please feel free to call if you would like to discuss further.
