29th March Update
A quiet week and not a great deal to update on.
It’s great to see the flat season getting underway and we have two horses who should be appearing on the track before too long. Surrey King has been on his best behaviour this week and, most importantly, hasn’t had any stalls issues. Ear plugs have been introduced and seem to be doing the trick – sometimes the simple solutions work best! He’ll have a stalls test soon and, fingers crossed, he gets the green light from that. If all goes to plan, we’ll then aim him for his seasonal debut in April, likely at Newbury on April 18th.
Surrey Moon should also be racing soon, with his debut now getting very close. Originally we thought he’d be making the track last summer, so patience has been required with him. His work has been improving nicely, although he’s still showing a bit of immaturity when working alongside other horses – a bit like the new kid at school who hasn’t quite figured out the group projects yet. It does look as though he may just be a late developer, but the ability seems to be there.
There’s no new news on Surrey Bolt or Surrey Etoile.
We are keeping an eye out for a new NH horse, but we’ll remain patient to make sure we find the right horse at the right price. In the meantime, Surrey Quest is thoroughly enjoying his retirement. It looks increasingly likely that he will go to Abby, who is currently in the process of buying a new stable. Once she completes, Quest will be moving in. Abby was Quest’s rider when he first joined Toby before she moved last year to become head lass at Ed Walker’s yard. Quest will go hacking with Abby and may even be retrained for some low-level show jumping. One thing is guaranteed – he’ll receive plenty of love, attention, and probably a few extra treats along the way.
Finally, Surrey Lord is back cantering and progressing well. He’ll have a couple of stronger pieces of work, along with a schooling session, before we look to get him back on the track. Cheltenham or Sandown later in April are the likely targets..
