30th August Update
When we retire a horse, we make sure they find a loving home, however, when we sell one at a sale, it’s invariably harder to track their progress, so it’s always great to hear if they are doing well. A case in point is recently, we were delighted to hear that Surrey Shadow (well done Mick!) won the Premio Schweppes on the beach in Andalucía earlier in the month. The race can be seen on this link about 5.05 minutes into the clip, the 3rd race on the card. Interestingly the 3rd place horse, Treasure Isle, is an ex 98 rated Coolmore/Aiden O’Brien horse who won the Listed Curragh Stakes and was sold for 12,000 guineas at the same HIT sale as Surrey Shadow.
With the beach season of races finished, expect to see Surrey Shadow running in the Spanish Autumn season at Hipódromo de La Zarzuela in Madrid, which is scheduled to kick off on 10 September 2026 and runs through to the end of November.
Talking about ex Surrey horses, we wish Abby and Surrey Quest all the best as they take on the 90 cm poles in their first showjumping contest at the Lambourn Show next Sunday at Park Farm in Upper Lambourn, free entry for those at a loose end.
On to our current horses, starting with the two who are under the watchful eye of the vet. Surrey Moon is having an injection into his neck the week of the 7th (the vet is on another holiday this week) and the results of that should become apparent within a few days. Surrey King seems to be well; he has a scheduled check-up appointment on September 8th where we hope to get the all-clear and Hughie can push on with his training.
Both Hillsyde Hope and Surrey Lord are well. Surrey Lord still hasn’t had a saddle on yet, but he has been ‘lunging’ all week so plenty of muscle building work and we’d expect him to be ridden next week.
Finally, Surrey Bolt, he has had some stalls work, plus other race day prep and we can finally think about him making his debut, and we go racing again, it’s been a while! A tentative race is a restricted sire/dam 1 mile contest race at Goodwood on Tuesday week (8th) so hopefully a smooth few days and an entry on Wednesday with more details for the owners after that.
