Mother’s Day Update
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums, I hope you have all been spoilt.
I trust you all enjoyed Cheltenham and backed an outsider or two? Those of us who entered Nicky’s tipping competition had a lot of fun without any Surrey Racing owner hitting the top 10 – there’s always next year! Thanks to Nicky and her helpers for organising, an easy seamless process for those taking part.
Yesterday we saw the final run of Surrey Quest’s fantastic career. Unfortunately, he has had one issue too many to continue competing at the level we know he’s capable of, so it feels like the right time to wish him well as he begins life beyond racing. While he perhaps didn’t quite reach the heights his talent promised, he still put together a remarkable record: 4 wins and 5 places from 22 starts, earning more than ?105,000 in prize money. He was deservedly named Surrey Racing’s Horse of the Year in both 2024 and 2025. His name will forever be on the Mandarin Trophy, and who could forget the Scottish Grand National two years ago — a result that brought plenty of mixed emotions for everyone involved. Along the way he also starred in the Champions Series and even became something of a viral TikTok sensation! He’ll spend the next few weeks winding down from racing, and we’re sure there will be plenty of people keen to give him a wonderful home and a happy life after racing. The nice part is that retirement isn’t the end of the story — it’s just the start of the chapter where he gets to be spoiled even more and enjoy life outside racing. Horses with his kind of personality tend to land on their feet – which he didn’t do in the 2025 Scottish National !
Thanks for the Memories !
We hope we find another like him and who knows, Surrey Lord certainly could take up the challenge. He missed racing yesterday with a minor injury which will set him back a couple of weeks, then there are options at Ascot, Cheltenham, and Sandown. not a bad collection of tracks!
Surrey King is doing well, and his behaviour is improving daily, although there is still plenty of stubbornness about him. Hughie has advised us to stay in the German Derby for now (the next entry stage is tomorrow) and then reassess before the April 13th entry, by which point he will know a lot more. The plan, if he passes the stalls test and continues to behave well, would be to run at Newbury in a maiden over 11 furlongs on Saturday 18th April. That race is on a superb card featuring three Group races — the Greenham, the Fred Darling, and the John Porter, which could possibly feature Constitution Hill. We have a few owners coming to visit King next Saturday, so we’re looking forward to catching up and hearing more from Hughie about the forthcoming season.
Surrey Etoile was x-rayed this week, and the vet was happy with what he saw. The images have been sent to the surgeon in Chantilly, and we are now waiting for his comments. Etoile is great in himself, currently hand-walking for 20 minutes each day, and all being well he should be able to be turned out into a small paddock towards the middle of April.
No new news on Surrey Moon or Surrey Bolt – both are progressing and we will arrange a visit for the owners once Bolt has settled back into the Clover’s. Moon will probably have made his debut by then so that will be a good chance to have a debrief and plan what is next for him.
We will some of the Surrey King owners on Saturday, enjoy the week ahead.
