July 27th Update

We had a great trip to York on Friday, it is one of the best racecourses to visit as an owner, with quality hospitality, great racing, always a superb atmosphere at the course and around the city itself. The only let down was the performance of Surrey Fire who was in the perfect position (and favourite in-running) to go on and win the race, but when push came to shove, he just didn’t want to know. Jockey Oisin Murphy was adamant afterwards that based on his pedigree that he needs soft ground, we disagree, the dam was at her best on a quicker ground and the sire was very adept on good ground. Fire wasn’t blowing afterwards, so for whatever reason, mental or physical, he doesn’t want to put in the effort. That does then put us in a quandary about what to do next and how do we get the best from him until the end of the season? We will discuss options with Hughie and the syndicate owners, but change is needed.

Next to run will be Surrey Shadow who has a couple of options at Haydock on Saturday 9th, two class 3 handicaps (0-95) over 7f or a mile. He does need soft ground so hopefully more unsettled weather over the coming weeks in the North West.

There isn’t too much to report on the other horses, the NH trio will start schooling this week as they continue to build up to their seasonal reappearance and the two-year-olds continue to do their thing.

Glorious Goodwood this week, Nicky is running her usual tipping competition, only £20 – and always lots of fun, reach out to her and invite your family and friends, Nicky’s email is hassle04@icloud.com . Steve and I will be there every day (which gets tougher every year!!) and are looking forward to seeing those who are making the trip to Sussex, come and say hello! We will hopefully be meeting our trainers there as well so a full round up of the horses next weekend.
