We are delighted to announce that we have bought Surrey Rock, one of the best-bred horses we have ever owned at Tattersalls’s Book 1 yearling sale.
Surrey Rock, a colt, is by New Bay, son of the legendary Dubawi. New Bay was high class, being from the same family as Kingman. He won the French Derby and was placed in the French 2000 Guineas and the Arc. He’s been a revelation as a stallion with a covering fee of €75k. He has sired three Group 1 winners, Saffron Beach, Bayside Boy and Bay Bridge and has a very healthy 18% stakes horses to runners from his first two crops. Given his pedigree and ability on the track, it was always going to be a good bet that New Bay would develop into a top stallion, but his rise has been nothing short of astonishing. This was never more evident than on Champions Day when New Bay became the first horse to sire the winners of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Champions Stakes on the same afternoon.
The dam, Clipper Class was unraced, but there is black type all over the page, with her being by wonder horse Frankel. Not only is Frankel one of the world’s leading sire, he’s also one of the very best broodmare sires with a 51%-win rate. Clipper Class’s mare, Speedy Boarding, was also high class, winning 3 Group 1s including the Prix de l’Opera and being related to Queen Vase winner Dashing Willoughby.
Tom Clover can’t believe we landed him for the price. Tom said ”he’s a smashing colt, physically imposing, and considering his family and pedigree, I think we have a horse who will give us every chance to be successful”
