February 15th Update
A week off from the newsletter last week as there wasn’t a great deal to report.
Similar this week as our two NH horses await the rain to stop and the better ground. Both are fresh and well, Surrey Lord’s ideal next race is Newbury on the 28th but the ground at Newbury is currently as bad as it’s ever been and without a break in the rain that date is looking more unlikely the closer we get to the end of the month. Surrey Quest is also well and enjoying himself which makes his breathing issue even more frustrating, if he had fallen out of love for racing it would an easy decision, but he hasn’t at all. The palate is a muscle so he will be pushed in training to try to build that and will run again when the ground is firmer. We will just have to see how that goes and make any decision on his future after that run. So both horses now look more likely to run in March – if it stops raining!
Of the flat horses, two are in rehab but so far that is going well for them. Surrey Etoile is now out of his cast and is being hand walked twice a day, plus he can now go out into a small pen for a change of scenery. The vets in Normandy have remarked on what a good job the surgeons in Chantilly did so reasons for optimism although he still has a long road ahead. Surrey Bolt is at the Callan’s pretraining yard where is on the walker for a few more weeks before he comes back to the Clover’s. Surrey Moon’s had a breeding stamp last week with his half sister All Moonshine racking up her hattrick at Kempton in impressive style in her first handicap off an opening mark of 80 which I’m sure will jump to 85 when the new mark is released on Tuesday. Moon is doing two canters a day after his break in January: he’ll be ready for a grass debut in April.
The next entry stage for the Germn Derby is Monday and Surrey King will stay in (7 horses have pulled out from the original 100 entries). We are visiting Hughie tomorrow to see how King is and if he’s on track for the season ahead. We will feedback next week, as well as giving you a date for an owners visit in March. Remember all the trainers love to see the owners visiting at any time (not Sundays) so you don’t have to wait for the organised visit, just let us know and we will coordinate a date with the trainer that suits you and them.
Have a good week ahead
