Surrey Lord back to back!
On a very gloomy Kempton, with the light fading, all our eyes were on the lucky last, a class 4 hurdle for conditional jockeys only, where one of the best, Ben Macey, was making his yellow and blue debut. Ben said the pace could be strong so he would ride nearer the back and try to pick the horses off in the final stages, and that’s exactly how it played out although Surrey Lord did have to endure a heavy bump two from home which kicked one of his hind shoes off. Not deterred, he kept his focus and stayed on well to win by just over a length from outsider Cornish Storm.
He didn’t jump as well as his last win at Ffos Las and still looks immature in running, but the penny is starting to drop with him and the patient owners are starting to be rewarded.
Next up - the hattrick attemp!
